Napoleon by MegLyman Napoleon by MegLyman
8x10" gouache and ink on board

This was a fantastically fun commission after Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass by master Jacques-Louis David. I know I didn't get the horse quite right, but it works, and I actually kinda like the end result. It makes me want to do more master copies with cephalopods replacing the subjects. Might make them more realistic, though, so they fit in with the original painting...

What do you think are some good master works to practice with octopus?

Totally faved this ... love the original and your version equally!

How about the "Last Supper" with Jesus and the disciples? Can't recall the artist - my lack of art knowledge is showing ...:(

I have to second "Birth of Venus", that's just perfect material!!

Thanks! I've considered that (by da Vinci) with multiple sea creatures... a big project though!

Yeah, it'd be a big project but worthy of your talent! I mean that, no empty flattery there. Your cephalo-art makes me happy.

I'm frankly surprised the horse isn't an octopus, too.

The only way this could be better is if Napoleon actually was an octopus.

Thanks for the critique! Was the original that way too, or was it the way I translated it?

I think it just might have been that the way you translated it or that the image of the original that you had was different then the ones i've seen?

<<< this is the version i've always seen.

Regardless i enjoyed your version too :)

Edit: wont let me post links o.0!! :( ummmm hmm well the version i've seen the backround is a mountainous image, steel blueish the clouds almost have a rainbowy effect in one corner if you look closely darn i wish it would let me post the link lol but i'm sure you've seen this image adnauseum anyway u get the idea :P

You could always do the Olympia, with the serving woman offering her an octopus instead of flowers. Or that Bougereau painting "Young Girl Defending herself Against Cupid" with her defending herself against an octopus. Or that one with Judith's maid carrying the head of Holofernes (forget who by), only have her carrying an octopus furtively out of the city. Or "The Raising the Son of Theophilus and Peter Enthroned" by Masaccio, with him raising an octopus.

Ahahahaha, this is made of so much epic win. LOVE IT!!!
I'm stuck at home today in an extreme amount of pain basically cursing my life, the kind of pain that makes you double over and claw at your own body trying to make it stop. And this completely made my day. I actually laughed for the first time all day. This is brilliant. Thank you so so much, I needed a laugh. I am definitely :+fav:ing it. You are my saviour. :worship:
You should do that Delacroix painting, Liberty Leading the People, only with an octopus instead of Lady Liberty. That'd be great. Or maybe that painting of Washington crossing the Delaware. That'd be good too.
Wonderful piece of work!! :D

"Oath of the Horatii" with a squid holding up all the swords by itself.

You could call it the start of a series unified by the fact that you're only defacing David paintings.

So many questions… okay, that's a lie. There are actually two.
1) Should he be riding a sea horse?
2) How many arms does he put in his coat when he poses for paintings?

1) Maybe
2) Depends on the phase of the moon

Two, because he stands on four and two each are left for the arms. Unless it's a squid... hmm.

I never imagined you could fit Napoleon's expression with a cephalopod. Goes to show me. I love all the detail work, especially in the cloak. Maybe next you should do A Sunday in the Park on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
